An Analysis of the Learning Needs of Students in Learning Thai as a Foreign Language in Malaysia Context

The purpose of this study was to analyse the learning needs of students in learning Thai as a Foreign Language in Malaysia context. Fifty-five students enrolled in Thai language courses at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya conducted to survey. The study aimed to (1) assess the learning needs of Thai language regarding acquiring the four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing; (2) survey the understanding of cultural component and foreign language learning. The data was collected using an online survey questionnaire. The study found that the skills most valued by the respondents were speaking and listening. Also, the students considered the understanding of culture as an essential element for foreign language learning efficiency. The findings and insights gained from this study will explicate into enhancing the curriculum development and foreign language teaching practice at the University of Malaya, especially for the teaching of Thai language.
